Anatomical alterations in taro corms with "metsubure" symptoms Horticultura Brasileira
Pereira,Francisco HF; Puiatti,Mário; Meira,Renata MSA; Fontes,Paulo CR.
Taro plants present high Ca absorption. There is evidence that the disorder "metsubure" is of nutritional origin being attributed to calcium deficiency. The metsubure is characterized by the corm apical bud suppression and a smooth lesion in the apex. This disorder reduces the taro corms value as food and hinders their utilization as a propagative material in commercial fields. In subterranean structures, Ca deficiency is believed to be more harmful to the vascular tissue cells since they have thicker walls than other tissue cells. Thus, this work aimed to characterize the anatomical changes in taro corms (Colocasia esculenta), cv. Chinese (BGH 5928) with "metsubure" symptoms. For this, corms with and without this symptom were obtained from plants grown in...

Carryover of tembotrione and atrazine affects yield and quality of potato tubers Agronomy
Reis, Marcelo Rodrigues; Aquino, Leonardo Ângelo; Melo, Christiane Augusta Diniz; Silva, Daniel Valadão; Dias, Roque Carvalho.
Crop rotation improves potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) crops; however, in some cases, it can have some negative effects due to the herbicides previously used in crops under rotation. These effects are the decline in the yield and the appearance of physiological disorders, including cracked tubers, which impair the quality and economic value of the potato. Two field experiments were performed with applications of tembotrione and atrazine, alone or in combination. In the Rio Paranaiba (Minas Gerais State) area, in clay soil, the herbicides were applied at post-emergence in corn (Zea mays L.). After corn harvest and soil preparation, the potatoes were planted. In the Serra do Salitre (Minas Gerais State) area, in the medium texture soil, the herbicides were...

Characterization and occurence of eairly softening disorder in 'golden' papaya fruits Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Jacomino,Angelo Pedro; Gallon,Camilla Zanotti; Dias,Ianesmara Soares; Pinto Pereira,Walter Sergio.
The occurrence of green skin and soft pulp in 'Golden' papaya fruit during certain seasons has been reported by farmers in the northern of the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. The objective of this study was to characterize and determine the occurrence of this disorder, which was referred as "early softening disorder". Fruits were harvested weekly for 11 months (from September to July). The fruits were stored at 10°C, and then fruit flesh firmness and skin color were analyzed. The results of the firmness test were submitted to regression analysis assuming a linear trendline. The slope of the curve was called the 'softening index' (SI). Fruits with early softening are characterized by a loss of firmness in less than 10 days, even when stored under...

Comparison of fruit maturation and quality of ‘Gala’ apple strains at harvest and after storage Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Argenta,Luiz Carlos; Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do; Brancher,Thyana Lays; Betinelli,Karyne Souza; Bartinick,Vinícius Adão; Nesi,Cristiano Nunes.
Abstract Strains of ‘Gala’ apples with highly red-colored skins have been planted in new orchards based on consumer interest and financial returns to the producers. The effect of somatic mutation may not be limited to change in fruit skin appearance. In this study, six ‘Gala’ strains were compared regarding fruit maturity and quality attributes at commercial harvest time and after 210 days in controlled atmosphere cold storage plus seven days shelf-life. Experimental orchards were established in three regions and fruit assessed over four seasons. The fruit skin red color area was highest in ‘Baigent’ and ‘Galaxy’, and lowest in ‘Royal Gala’ and ‘Imperial Gala’. Fruit of ‘Maxi Gala’ and ‘Gala Real’ had intermediate skin coloration among the six strains....

Moggia,Claudia; Hernández,Omar; Pereira,Marcia; A. Lobos,Gustavo; Yuri,José Antonio.
A study was carried out to determine the effects of two cooling systems and the application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, SmartFreshTM) on the incidence of superficial scald in apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) cv. Granny Smith. Fruit were collected from a commercial orchard (Colbún, Maule Region, Chile) during 2004-2005 season. A completely randomized design was used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, using cooling systems (normal and step-wise cooling) and application of 1-MCP (0 and 625 nL L-1 i.a.) as the main factors. Fruit from normal cooling were kept at 0 °C throughout the storage period (180 days). Step-wise cooling consisted of storing the fruit at 10 °C for 10 days; 4 °C for the next 20 days and 0 °C for the remaining 150 days. Every month,...

Fruit quality preservation of 'Laetitia' plums under controlled atmosphere storage Anais da ABC (AABC)
STEFFENS,CRISTIANO ANDRÉ; AMARANTE,CASSANDRO V.T. DO; ALVES,ERLANI O.; BRACKMANN,AURI.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of controlled atmosphere (CA) on quality preservation of ‘Laetitia’ plums, mainly on internal breakdown, in order to determine the best CA storage conditions. Two experiments were carried out one in 2010, and another in 2011. In 2010, besides cold storage (CS; 21.0 kPa O2 + 0.03 kPa CO2), the fruits were stored under the following CA conditions (kPa O2+kPa CO2): 1+3, 1+5, 2+5, 2+10, and 11+10. In 2011, the fruits were stored under CS and CA of 1+0, 1+1, 2+1, and 2+2. The fruit stored under different CA conditions had lower respiration and ethylene production, better preservation of flesh firmness, texture and titratable acidity, lower skin red color, and lower incidence of skin cracking than the fruit...

Corrêa,Thais Roseli; Steffens,Cristiano André; Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do; Miqueloto,Aquidauana; Brackmann,Auri; Ernani,Paulo Roberto.
ABSTRACT Flesh browning is a physiological disorder that occurs in ‘Fuji’ apples during storage, which causes considerable postharvest losses of fruit produced in Southern Brazil. This work aimed to assess the mineral attributes [Ca; Mg and K contents and the Mg/Ca; K/Ca and (K + Mg)/Ca ratios] associated with the flesh browning disorder incidence, as well as to identify which of these mineral attributes better discriminate the differences in the degree of susceptibility to flesh browning disorder in ‘Fuji’ apples stored under controlled atmosphere (CA; 1.2 kPa O2 + 2.0 kPa CO2 and 1.2 kPa O2 + < 0.5 kPa CO2; 0.5 ± 0.1 °C and 96 ± 2% RH, during an 8-month period). Apples from 2 orchards in Fraiburgo, Santa Catarina, 3 orchards in São Joaquim, Santa...

Peteca rind pitting as influenced by proline content in winter lemon albedo Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Fichet,Thomas; Chamorro,Jorge; Riquelme,Alejandro.
One of the most important problems in lemon growing is the physiological disorder known as "peteca", which is characterized by causing cell dehydration and death in the albedo tissue with a subsequent necrosis of the surface zone of the fruit. This damage shows characteristics quite similar to those resulting from chilling injury in citrus fruit, where surface damage of fruit and dehydration of albedo cells also occur. Resistance to chilling injury shown by grapefruit would be related to increased proline content in the albedo (Purbis, 1981). In this study, proline content of lemons cv. "Fino" 49 from two groves, one in Curacaví (33°25.778 S - 71°02.292 W, 196 m above sea level) and the other in Mallarauco (33°94.984 S - 70°58.921 W, 269 m above sea...

‘ROCHA’ PEARS STORED UNDER CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE WITH ULTRA-LOW AND LOW O2 ASSOCIATED WITH DIFFERENT CO2 LEVELS Rev. Bras. Frutic.
MARTIN,MARIUCCIA SCHLICHTING DE; STEFFENS,CRISTIANO ANDRÉ; AMARANTE,CASSANDRO VIDAL TALAMINI DO; BRACKMANN,AURI; RODRIGUES,MARÍLIA FARIAS; SOETHE,CRISTINA.
ABSTRACT The storage of ‘Rocha’ pears under controlled atmosphere (CA) preserves fruit quality for long periods. However, inadequate CA conditions might impair ripening and lead to flesh browning. This research was carried out to assess the effects of CA with ultra-low (ULO), and low O2 (LO) associated with different CO2 levels on ripening and occurrence of flesh browning in ‘Rocha’ pears. Treatments evaluated were: pO2 = 0.5 kPa (ULO) and pCO2 < 0.03 kPa; pO2 = 1.0 kPa (LO) and pCO2 < 0.03 kPa; pO2 = 1.0 kPa and pCO2 = 1.0 kPa; pO2 = 1.0 kPa and pCO2 = 2.0 kPa; and pO2 = 1.0 kPa and pCO2 = 3.0 kPa. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with four replicates. Fruits were harvested in Vacaria, RS, and stored under five CA conditions...
